Avoid Heartburn During Pregnancy and Enjoy Life
Written by admin, August 31st, 2011

It is common to hear pregnant women complain of heartburn. The first trimester is difficult because of nausea, particularly morning sickness and the second and the third pose the problem of heartburn that is also known as acid indigestion. Being pregnant it makes sense to look for natural pregnancy heartburn remedies.

Acid reflux is the cause of this burning sensation in the esophagus. The enlarged uterus pushes at the stomach causing the gastric fluids to be pushed upwards. Changes in the hormone levels add to the problem by changing the way different foods are tolerated and also by affecting the muscles of the food canal. The esophageal sphincter, for instance, gets relaxed and fails to effectively stop the stomach acids from coming back up. All our efforts to find pregnancy heartburn relief have to take into consideration the safety of the baby. The following measures are baby friendly:

It is best to go for six or more small meals spread out evenly through the day. Make sure to make the meals small enough to allow for all the space the digestive juices need in the stomach so that there is no chance of the juices flowing back up. Chew your food properly. Spices by their very nature are somewhat corrosive. In pregnant women, they add to the discomfort by increasing the burning sensation. It is best, therefore, to use only aromatic spices that do not irritate the stomach. Avoiding chilli and other irritants will help contain the heartburn. Fried and rich foods take longer to digest and require the stomach to produce more juices and this can only aggravate the problem. Such foods are best avoided by pregnant women.
