Eterna is another in a long line of Swiss watch companies steeped in tradition and heritage. Founded in 1856 in the small town of Grenchen, Eterna watches got its start by manufacturing pocket watches with alarms and, when they started coming into style in the early 1900s, the first wristwatch with an alarm in 1914 (with technology patented 6 years prior). Eterna would go on to set the standard on making compact quality watches, eventually releasing in 1980 the quartz Eterna Museum, a watch that measured just .98 millimeters in height, including the casing. Eterna was bought by the German Porsche Designs (yes, that “Porsche”) in 1995 and continued manufacturing watches under license from Porsche Designs since 1998. So what does the power of two high-caliber brands offer in the way of watches? Quality. To borrow from the Eterna slogan, “Nothing But Watchmaking,” these watches are nothing but quality. Most of these watches start at a list price of $2,995 and slowly work their way up to $21,900. What justifies these prices? Eterna’s commitment to their product: Eterna’s consummate professionals test every watch at every stage of development. Men’s watches from Eterna are regarded as some of the best watches available. Still, Eterna watches are somewhat of a secret to American consumers. Perhaps due to their price, or perhaps simply because the United States is so far behind in watches and watch appreciation that many American consumers wouldn’t think twice if they haven’t heard of the brand. Ironically, that sort of mysterious exclusivity lends itself well to Eterna, a company that prides itself on putting its watches on the wrists of the most appreciative and enthused clients. How exclusive? Only five places in the United States are authorized service centers for Eterna watches. Eterna watches are serious products for serious enthusiasts. If you truly appreciate watches, there is an Eterna in your collection.
